Kawakawa Bay Coastal Path

We’re progressing investigations for a new 834‑metre path connection in Kawakawa Bay. The project aims to improve safe pedestrian access along the coastline while respecting the cultural, environmental and landscape values of the area.

What’s Happening

The project is preparing to move into the scoping phase, which will begin once a project manager is allocated.

Recent work includes:

• Early engagement with Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki and Ngāti Paoa, who have requested involvement at the outset of scoping
• Acknowledgement of cultural and heritage sensitivities along the coastal corridor
• Agreement to provide iwi with timelines and project information as soon as scoping formally begins

This early relationship‑building ensures iwi values and local knowledge can help guide the project from the start.

What’s Changing

As scoping begins, we will be exploring:

• Opportunities for a safe, accessible coastal walking connection
• How the path can be designed to protect the coastal environment
• Cultural considerations identified by mana whenua
• How the route could integrate with existing walking areas and local amenities
